Pentecost Sequence

pentecost247A “sequence” is a chant or hymn that originated in Latin and is recited or sung before the reading of the gospel. Most date back to the Middle Ages, during which sequences evolved into a musical genre. Few remain as part of any Mass, but Pentecost’s is one of them. Today’s Veni Sancte Spiritus is called the “Golden Sequence” and is attributed to Pope Innocent III. Medieval theologian Josse Clichtove proclaimed it “above all praise because of its wondrous sweetness, clarity of style, pleasant brevity combined with wealth of thought.” Pray this sequence today….
