Statue Given New Home, Renovation by Former Ursulines

Our Lady of Prompt Succor has a new place of honor on the grounds of our Motherhouse in Canfield, thanks to a group of 13 former Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown.
 
Our statue of Our Lady of Prompt Succor (a religious title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary by the Roman Catholic Church. She is also known as Notre Dame de Bon Secours) came to the notice of a group of former Ursuline Sisters who’ve gathered once a month for the last 40 years.
 
During one of these gatherings, Judie Albanese, a teacher at Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten and an Ursuline Associate, noticed that the shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor was in need of renovation. She brought it to the attention of the group, which continues to support each other, pray together and share their journeys.
 
“As the group talked, it was decided to go ahead with the plans,” Judi Albanese says. “The vision was presented to Sister Mary McCormick, general superior, and the leadership team of the Ursuline Sisters. The idea was received with great enthusiasm and so the project began.”
 
The 13 women decided to dedicate the new shrine in honor of the late Sister Mary Alice Ryan and Sister Marie Hughes. “Sister Mary Alice Ryan was our novice mistress during our years of formation, and helped to form us to be difference makers within the Mahoning Valley,” Judi Albanese says. “Sister Marie Hughes was the educational director and was responsible for helping to create the outstanding educators that the Ursuline Sisters were known for.”
 
The shrine is now located just off the patio for our Ursuline Sisters Senior Living ministry and easily visible for our Sisters in Motherhouse Healthcare. The two benches at the shrine have engraved plates noting their dedication to Sister Mary Alice and Sister Marie.
 
Sister Darla Jean Vogelsang and Ursuline Associate Mary Yvo Assion are preparing the dedication service for the new shrine, which will be held this fall.
 
“We former Ursulines have much gratitude for the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown for enabling us to make lasting friendships and become the women we are today,” Judi Albanese states.
