Sister Mary Dunn Sister Mary Dunn is the daughter of the late Elverton and Nellie Gallagher Dunn. She entered the Ursuline Sisters from St. Nicholas in Struthers after graduating from Ursuline High School. She earned a B.S. in Education from Youngstown State University and an M.S.E. from St. John College, Cleveland. All of her years in ministry have been in elementary education. She taught at St. Charles and St. Luke schools; she then served as principal at St. Luke and St. Patrick, Youngstown. Golden Jubilee The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown will celebrate Sunday, Oct. 19, as Sister Carole Suhar marks her golden jubilee (50 year anniversary). Invitations have been issued to family and friends for a celebratory Mass at 1 p.m. at the Motherhouse Chapel, which will be followed by dinner in the Motherhouse dining room. Sister Carole Suhar was born in Youngstown on April 21, 1945, to the late Steve and Margaret Suhar, and was a parishioner at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Austintown. After graduating from Ursuline High School, Sister Carole earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Youngstown State University and a Master of Science in Elementary Administration from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. She performed post-graduate work at Boston College, Dayton University, St. Mary of the Woods, St. Mary of the Woods, Ind., and YSU. Sister Carole also has earned numerous professional certifications. You could also go dining at restaruants in Boston. On Sept. 8, 1963, Sister Carole entered the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown. She was received into the Novitiate Aug. 6, 1964, and made her Final Profession Aug. 8, 1971. “I had wanted to be a nun for as long as I could remember but really couldn’t have told anyone why. I just did,” Sister Carole reflects. “Deep down a very shy person by nature, the very thought of leaving my family, my security should have been terrifying, but it wasn’t. Why not? I know now that it was because God was calling me. God was inviting me and giving me the strength and courage I needed to answer God’s call then and throughout these past 50 years.” Sister Carole has ministered in education for 41 years, and currently ministers as Intervention Specialist at St.Rose School, Girard, where she has worked since 2010. Sister Carole’s ministries have included serving as a principal of St. Rose, St.Nicholas School,Struthers, St.Luke School,Boardman, and St. Mary and Joseph School, Newton Falls, and teaching at St.Columba and Sacred Heart schools in Youngstown and St.Nicholas. She also has ministered as the Learning Center Coordinator at Ursuline High School. Sister Carole is active as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector at Holy Name of Jesus/Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, Youngstown
Golden Jubilee – 50 Years an Ursuline – Sr. Darla Our Sister Darla Vogelsang is celebrating 50 years as a nun in the Ursulines of Youngstsown. Sr. Darla entered the Ursulines in September 1960 after having graduated from Ursuline High School. She entered the novitiate in August 1961, which is the date for which we mark Jubilee. Sister Darla has had a variety of ministries during her 50 years as an Ursuline: as a teacher at St. Patrick, Youngstown and teacher and principal at Immaculate Conception elementary schools in Youngstown, as a parish minister at Immaculate Conception and Sacred Heart in Youngstown, St. Paul, Canton, and St. Patrick, Hubbard, in service to the Ursulines of Youngstown as a member of the Leadership Team, on the Liturgy Committee and the Retreat Committee. Most recently Sr. Darla was certified as a Catholic Chaplain. It is a kind of “encore career.” She now serves as chaplain for HMHP at St. Elizabeth, Boardman and St.Joseph, Warren. Sister Darla says that “a 50th anniversary for anyone is a hallmark year. It is also an opportunity in prayer, gratitude and celebration to look back at the people and the opportunities that have formed me in religious life. And it’s a celebration of the Ursuline Sisters as well, an opportunity for the community to celebrate the gift of Religious Life in the church.” Congratulations Sister Darla! Ad multos annos.
Sister Bridget Nolan Sister Bridget Nolan is the daughter of the late Donald and Lucille Barton Nolan. She entered the Ursuline Sisters from St. Paul the Apostle Parish, New Middletown, after graduating from Cardinal Mooney High School. She earned a B.S. in Education from Youngstown State University and an M.A. in Education from Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois. She taught at St. Nicholas, Struthers, St. Rose, Girard, in Youngstown at Immaculate Conception, Sacred Heart, Holy Family as teacher and principal and St. Charles as teacher and assistant principal. She served in parish ministry at Immaculate Conception, Ravenna, and St. Charles, Youngstown. She was past Director at The Ursuline Center in Canfield. For several years, she has worked in the Ursuline Sisters’ community archives and as Director of the Company of Angela. She was an adjunct teacher for the Sisters of St. Joseph, Rocky River, and the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland at their Spirituality Center. Currently, she serves as the Ursuline Motherhouse Administrator.
Sister Dorothy Kundracik Sister Dorothy Kundracik is the daugher of the late Michael and Margaret Martinko Kundracik. She entered the Ursuline Sisters from St. Patrick Parish after graduating from Ursuline High School. She earned a B.S. in Education from Youngstown State University and an M. Ed. from Indiana University in Pennsylvania. She has taught at St. John, Campbell, St. Nicholas, Struthers, Immaculate Conception, Wellsville, St. Joan of Arc, Canton, St. Rose, Girard, Immaculate Conception, Sacred Heart, SS. Cyril & Methodius, all in Youngstown, St. Labre Indian School, Ashland, Montana and Little Big Horn College, Crow Agency, Montana. She served in parish ministry at Our Lady of Lourdes, East Palestine, St. Aloysius, East Liverpool, and St. Dennis Parish, Crow Agency, Montana. She has worked in our Motherhouse community Healthcare Center and as a caregiver for Home Care Alternatives. Currently, she works at the SCOPE Senior Center in Lordstown.
Sister Elizabeth Anne Freidhoff Sister Elizabeth Anne Freidhoff is the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Calpin Freidhoff. She entered the Ursuline Sisters from St. Patrick Parish after graduating from Ursuline HighSchool. She earned a B.S. in Education from Youngstown State University, an M.A. in Education from the University of Dayton and pursued further graduate studies at Ursuline College, Cleveland. She has taught at various levels and schools: St. Nicholas, Struthers, St. Rose, Girard, in Youngstown at Sacred Heart, St. Columba, St. Charles where she also served in pastoral ministry, Holy Family in Poland, The Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten and Cardinal Mooney High School. Currently, she serves as Secretary for the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown.
Sister Mary Ann Diersing Sister Mary Ann Diersing, formerly known as Sister Robert Marie, is the daughter of the late Robert and Mary Rose Klempay Diersing. She entered the Ursulines from St. Edward Parish after graduating from Ursuline High School. She earned a B.S. in Education from Youngstown State University and an M. Ed. in Community Counseling from Kent State University. Her ministries have included teaching at St. Patrick and Sacred Heart schools in Youngstown, St. Rose in Girard and Our Lady of Lourdes in East Palestine. Serving in pastoral ministry, she spent five years in Peru, South America, and three years at Our Lady of Perpetual Parish Help in McDonald. Since 1979, she has served as a chaplain in the Spiritual Care Departments of several healthcare facilities. She is presently a chaplain at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.
Sister Nancy Dawson Sister Nancy Dawson , formerly known as Sister Anne Francis, is the daughter of the late Frances and Hannah Curley Dawson. She entered the Ursulines from Immaculate Conception Parish after graduating from Ursuline High School and beginning studies at Youngstown State University. She earned a B.S. in Ed. from Youngstown State University, an M.A. in Communications from the University of Notre Dame and an M.A. in Religious Studies at the Catholic University of America. Her ministries have included St. Charles (teacher & principal), Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline high schools, the Communication Department of the Diocese of Youngstown, St. Paul, New Middletown and the Ursuline Center. Currently she is an adjunct instructor of World Religions at Youngstown State University in addition to serving her third term as General Superior of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown.
